What is FinDS?

FinDS is a new summer program that covers the mathematical foundations of Data Science.

Who may attend FinDS?

Incoming 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.

When and where is it held? 

FinDS is held at UC San Diego campus tentatively from July 31st to August 18th, 2023.

How much does it cost to attend FinDS?

Virtual students will need to pay a $100 deposit. In-person students would pay a $100 deposit as well as $500 for food costs. 

Is financial assistance available?

Yes, financial assistance is available to those in need. No student will be returned due to financial hardship. If you need financial assistance, we will figure it out.

When will I be notified about whether or not I have been accepted into the program?

We will start sending admission notifications starting mid May. Apply early! 

Is there a minimum GPA to be accepted into FinDS?

None.

Are there prerequisites for the courses?

Highschool Algebra (Algebra II)

What about Teacher Recommendations? How does it work?

You will need at least 1 STEM teacher recommendation letter. Optional to provide 2. Once you provide the email, we will contact that teacher directly and let them know you are requesting a recommendation. You should let your teacher know they should expect an email from us requesting a recommendation. Letters of recommendation need to be sent in by the deadline, June 1, 2023. 

What does a sample schedule look like for FinDS In-Person Day Only?

2 hours of lecture + 2-3 hours of problem-solving.

What does a sample schedule look like for FinDS Online Only?

2 hours of lecture + 2-3 hours of problem-solving.

How many students will attend the program at UC San Diego?

We will be accepting 25 students for the in-person experience and up to 50 students for the virtual experience. 

Who are the FinDS Faculty and Staff? 

Dr. Rajiv Gandhi is the main faculty member. He will be supported by PhD students and undergraduate students.

Is high school or college credit available for FinDS attendance? 

No

May I attend FinDS more than once? 

You'll be able to attend the virtual year-round experience once you've completed Group 1. If qualified, you'll be invited to participate in an advanced experience called Group 2.
